Disaster Tips for Your Email List

The magnitude of the disaster along the US Gulf Coast has not yet hit home, but it will, probably this week. Your email newsletter MUST take this into account. About three percent of the American population is somehow impacted by Katrina - either homeless and/or powerless due to the storms, busy taking in evacuees from the Gulf area, or deployed there helping. They’re not reading your email at all.

Marketing Sherpa has put together a list of Katrina-related information for marketers and advertisers. One item in particular caught our attention. Here's an excerpt and a link to the full article:

"Potentially millions of email addresses have been affected by Katrina. Email users may not have access to regular email for days or weeks. Their mailboxes may quickly fill and start sending mailers auto-bounce messages. This means emailers' list management systems could unsubscribe those names automatically due to deliverability concerns. It also means mailers' open and click result reports will show anomalies.

"If you have an integrated database, and can identify which of your email opt-ins are in the affected regions, you should use USPS zip guidelines to segment your files."

E-append proves a great source of names in a disaster:

One of our clients had only about 2000 active email addresses when we started working with them in June. We helped append email addresses to their direct mail donors, which added another 3500 addresses. (We also helped them find and add about 6000 more email addresses from online donors which they had not already added to their list). This is the list to which we started sending hurricane email appeals on Monday of last week.

On Thursday, they were offered the use of a list of donors to a related organization. While that list already had thousands of email addresses, we also suggested the appending of email addresses to the rest of that list. Together we will add about 20,000 more email addresses of potential donors at a critical time.

We’ve been a bit busy this week, but have found time to load some ideas into our new web log (http://npadvisors.blogspot.com/). Please add it to your news feed, and contribute your own ideas.
