Honoring Aid Workers Online and in Our Hearts
Many in the nonprofit sector complain -- rightfully so -- of short staff, low pay, and long hours. Most of you have running water, shelter, and even (if you are reading this) electricity. Many of your colleagues around the world do not, nor do they even have security, and it’s time to honor them this Thanksgiving season This week we learned of the apparent murder of Margaret Hassan, CARE’s leader in Iraq. She was kidnapped earlier this month. This week we also observe the first anniversary of the murder of Bettina Goislard in Afghanistan. Bettina , a 29-year old woman working for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, was killed when gunmen pulled up to her clearly-marked UNHCR vehicle in the center of a town in Eastern Afghanistan, fatally shooting her in the neck and chest. Like Margaret Hassan, all Bettina wanted to do was help. To honor refugee camp workers this holiday season, NPAdvisors helped the US Association for the UN High Commission for Refugees (USA for UNHCR) produce what it hopes will be the “World’s Largest Holiday Card.” You can view it, and add your name to it, at http://thanks.unrefugees.org. The card allows you to enter your name and hometown, and a sentiment that you’d like to share with refugee camp workers. They will receive the card via internet, satellite, or on paper, delivered via helicopter or relief convoy, and we hope they are buoyed by the good wishes of those back home. Already almost 600 people from the USA and around the world have signed the card. Please add your name to it, too. November 2004 | |
