Nonprofits Rank Email Best Community Building Tool, Kintera Survey Shows

In a recent web poll asking nonprofits “What is the best way your organization builds community?,” 41 percent said email is the key means for building community among their constituents.  Phone outreach was named most important by 25 percent of those surveyed; 18 percent said websites were most effective in building their community; while 16 percent noted that direct mail was best.  The survey was conducted by Kintera Inc., the leading provider of software as a service to nonprofits, via their website at www.kintera.com.

“Building community is arguably the most important endeavor a nonprofit can undertake to ensure its success,” said Dr. Harry Gruber, founder and CEO of Kintera.  “In the business realm, community building has meant success for companies like eBay, which connects people who have similar passions for collecting items.  Nonprofits can also build and connect with their various communities – most effectively through email – to rally varied individuals around causes in which they are committed.”

Adds Dr. Gruber, “Direct mail, websites and the telephone all play a part in a nonprofit’s overall community building mission, but only email provides the immediacy and real-time connection that allows for this type of crucial interaction.  A proven example is the 2002 AIDS Walk in New York, where online participants – a community of people with common interests – used Internet grassroots marketing tools to raise an incredible 350% more than offline participants.”
