Directories of Online Donation Processing Firms

At least three organizations have compiled lists of companies that provide online donation processing services.

Npower.org lists 15 donation processors who have answered questions 19 questions like:

  • What share of contributions does your service retain? Does this include fees for credit card processing?
  • What is your donor privacy policy? Will donor information be shared with anyone apart from the charity to whom the contribution is designated? Will you use the donor information yourself for any purpose?
  • How does your service deal with the registration requirements that surround online fundraising in many states? Is your service itself registered as a fundraising agent or charity in these states? Or, instead (or, in addition) do you ask that the charity register on its own?
  • Is it possible for the charity to create a donations page that mirrors the look and feel of its own Web site? If yes, what is the process, and is there a charge?
  • How - and how often - will a charity receive the contributions received through your service?

The 49-page document in Adobe Acrobat format (.pdf) is dated April 2001 and can be downloaded from: http://www.npowerseattle.org/tools/edonations.htm

Marc Lee, CFRE of Affinity Resources, fund raising counsel, has a list of 21donation processors which he compiled. Information is updated on each provider regularly, and the update dates in the report vary from last May, when the report was first published, to this past January. The report is available at his web site at http://www.affinityresources.com/pgs/awz55Online.html. In addition to a good overview article on the subject, Marc's table is an easy-to-read comparison of the services.

Finally, Nonprofitmatrix has a list of about 50 providers, each with its own page of information. Nonprofitmatrix allows users to enter and view reviews of their vendors, but there are very few such reviews available now. The list is at http://www.nonprofitmatrix.com/browse.asp?ID=31&Cat=Onlinedonations
